17. For This is America, and We are Better than That!

“They kill protesters by the dozen by police cars in other countries. They jail journalists, authors, all the time for the smallest things, and gas, torture their own citizens, stage “confessions” on Television, and hold fake elections, and we over here complain about “our president” tear-gassing a bunch of peaceful protesters, and walking across to a burned church for a photo-up! We “voice” our opinions from the comfort of our homes! And scream! “No this is not what America is all about”!”

One of the privileges of being an American is being able to live in the bubbly illusion of mass mainstream media, media and media. Mainstream media in the US, more than in any other country, has got us Americans by the balls. The court of public opinion has, throughout the years, made up our minds about many things, and we have been the judge and jury on many occasions. Our elections have been decided based on a candidate’s last minute TV ratings, and our disillusioned fantasy called Democracy caves in, bends the knee every once in a “reality check”.

Enter any café, any bar, anywhere in Europe, Asia, or the Middle East, Africa, Australia or anywhere else, but the US of A, and you will hear at least one person talking about politics, about what is going on somewhere around the world. Conversations about politics, seeing the bigger picture, seeing through the facade and conversations beyond just what is, on philosophy, anarchy and anything but whom Kim Kardashian fucked that day!

The point here is not that we are a bunch of ignorant fucks, but that we are a bunch of ignorant entitled fucks whose view of the world is so limited by what is fed into our brains through the mass media! We buy into, believe, and take everything at face value, without looking into, without further investigation, questioning, and navigation. We are the epiphany of freedom and democracy! Oh and of fucking Human Rights! Civil Rights and LGBQT Rights! Any rights! You name it, we got it! Oh yes! We have arrived! Shit happens and we say, “oh no! Not here in America! Oh no! We are better than this! This is not what we are all about!”.

You see, we are preoccupied with our own shit. We live in a bubble called the USA, fighting “the war on terror”, fighting this “war”, that “war”, through hashtags. We salute our “men and women in uniform”, send them shampoo, condoms, cookies and a bible to pray, and to keep them “safe”, while they are ordered to bomb other countries, cities, and burn homes and kill civilian men, women and children and come back with PTSD. We build walls to “protect” our borders, while ignoring the shit going on elsewhere. We throw ten-year-old kids in immigration cages and separate them from their parents. We shut our teachers up by giving them guidelines on what to say or what to avoid.

We criticize, judge, and accuse other people, cultures, other governments, other countries, of being savages, oppressors, while we go on getting brainwashed through mass media, and then an “exposé” on some news outlet and we are all set! We have seen the light! We see what we want and totally ignore other things. We are self-absorbed, self-conscience, and without a care in the world, we only see what’s put in front us. No questions asked. Asking questions, going against the status quo, equals getting deserted, abandoned and left alone! Dare to disagree with the majority rule, dare not to conform, and you are fucked. The court of public opinion will accuse, convict and hang you by the balls, and your life is ruined by the notion of having a non-conformist-opinion.

They kill protesters by the dozen by police cars in other countries. And scream! “No this is not what America is all about”!

We believe it all, chew up the cud, and shit, vomit and ruminate the propaganda. We talk about our “privilege” and “using” it! We stay silent over some things and get with the crowd over some other! We have this impression of the US being the “savior”, the “helper” of all else! Like those WW movies with US troops coming in to “save the world”, to free it of the tirant!, to set the world free and bringing back “stability through the region”.

Our soap operas, very popular, not only here but also in other countries and translated into every single language ever imaginable, show “our lives”, full of cars and mansions and rich, successful people. We are selling this image, this image of a powerhouse, of a strong democracy, stable economy, comfortable lives and open minds, while we are cut off from the rest of the world, and only concerned with our little corner.

For the past few days, we feel that change is about to come, as if the wind of change is blowing and carrying us to the threshold of everlasting progress. Oh let’s change this shit, we say. Let’s chant this slogan and that one, let’s be enraged but peaceful. Let’s vote. Let’s make our voices heard in November! All the while we fail to see beyond what has been going on. We fail to see so many things, so many aspects, and seem to be missing “the big picture”.

But let’s march! Let’s hold hands in silent protest, and complain over a tweet! Let’s be “hopeful” that “change” is around the corner, and that it’ll all be “over” soon. Let’s believe in democracy, the power of our privileges, our “rights”, and of our Constitution. Let’s believe in the Justice System, and its power to bring all to “justice”. Let’s make a big deal out of one thing and ignore the rest of the stink. Let’s be vessels for propaganda, and be used to convey to the world that “yes we, Americans, in the US of A, want change. We are fed up with tyranny! We want, need, and are ready for progress and better days. Hashtag #notmypresident

All it takes, is prayers, submission, peaceful demonstrations, and law and order. Let’s just ignore the immigrants fleeing persecution elsewhere, and let’s close our borders. Let’s read a book on human rights, and turn off the lights after watching an actor’s acceptance speech encouraging us to “Vote! Stay calm, and bring change through peace”. Let’s change lives from our bedrooms, inside our closets, and on the rooftops, while posting pictures and videos of the “oppressed” hash-tagged, #ALM. Let’s be politically-correct and inclusive, and let’s blame all our problems on riots, looters and lawlessness!

For this is America! And we are better than that!
